For Dr. Joe Stubbs, being fit is a matter for both mind and body.
My father inspired me to go into medicine. He impressed upon me the joy and satisfaction of being a physician, where one has the opportunity to relate and care for others like no other profession, he said.
Along with his father, a retired family practitioner and medical director of DeKalb Medical Center, Dr. Stubbs has two other family members who pursued careers in medicine. His sister went into nursing, and his father-in-law was a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Emory Universitys School of Medicine.
I enjoy gardening, with an especial love of day lilies which were the passion of my father-in law, Dr. Stubbs said. Fishing is another interest. I had some of the best conversations and moments with my father and grandparents sitting in the boat.
He also enjoys bicycling and tennis.
And Dr. Stubbs also exercises his mind ... by writing poetry. He traces that interest to his love for poet W.B. Yeats.
As a physician, he has been drawn toward the treatment of long-term diseases. My most rewarding experience as a physician has been caring for patients with multiple chronic diseases and helping them improve the quality of their lives and do more of the things they like to do.
Packing so much into a busy life has its challenges, Dr. Stubbs admits. But the payoff makes it all worth while.
